Well it's almost here! Moab! We are leaving Vegas Friday night and should
arrive Saturday morning stopping somewhere along the way (where ever we pass
out). We will be there Sept 4th to Sept 13th heading out the morning of the
13th. If anyone is in the area and wants to wheel we will be staying at the
Sliprock campgrounds. Should be a great time and not sure what day but
we'll be frying a turkey one night and likely going to Milt's every other
night. If I don't make it back, it's because I had a heart attack :)
I know this isn't exactly Unimog topic but with an upcoming employment
option I'm looking at 100+ mile a day in commuting and I'm thinking a Bike
maybe more of a friend then my 3500 Dully dodge LOL I know someone here
must ride and or read about the BMW 1200 GS Adventure and must know of a
few web site to recommend for reading?

Hi All,
I finally got the chance to do some troubleshooting on my 404, which died in
New Mexico last month and got towed back to California on a trailer. It
still somewhat shifted into a few gears, so i drained the tranny, filled it
with Amsoil 5w-30 MTF, and worked the shifter around a bit. As it is, I only
have 1st and 3rd, with no neutral. The neutral position acts like the gear
above it, ie neutral between 3 and 4 is third gear. Fwd/reverse selector
works, as does it's neutral range.
I was fooling around with my new Android Mobile phone, and discovered the
App "Google Goggles" will auto translate text from German (and many other
languages) to English. Now I don't speak a lick of German (its on the to-do
list) And it sucks to try to type it into Google/yahoo/bablefish translate,
so this for me is super fun.
I made a short video using a camera phone to record another camera phone
(its all I have) so you'll probably have to watch it in high quality to get
the full effect.
We arrived in Los Alamos after several days in the Sangre de Christo mountains of northern New Mexico. I have posted updated photos on http://www.billcaid.com/2010/HogHunting20100323/Part31/Part31.html and Part32 We have covered a large number of miles since the last photo update, ergo 2 full pages.
Enjoy the photos. We will be meeting with local moggers here in Los Alamos tonight (Patrick Kennedy) and tomorrow with KC Carpenter et al is the ALBQ area.
We are guessing that we are about 10 days away from home.
Hey Guys,
I am going with a friend next week to pick up a Unimog, its a Radio
Box (Not a Swiss, maybe German?), seems to be 100% complete, though I
don't know about the interior of the box. Anyone know the curb weight
of such a truck? Much appreciated! Thanks!

So I have been away playing head paper towel boy in the gulf for the summer.
Last spring I come up with the great idea to help a good friend in Canada
get a U500 in Germany. I was working over there during the winter and
part of the early spring. I travel the 130 km to Munich look at the U500,
nice rig no issues. Test drove it, basically drives like a 4x4 cab
over. but it fits my friends plans so I am happy to help him out. I make
arrangements to have the truck inspected by SGS in Germany who I deal with
on a regular basis.
I don't know if it is pertinent to the Unimogs but most 4x4 trucks when shifted into four wheel drive will not come out unless you reverse and straighten the wheels. Something to do with gear loading!
Perhaps someone should try this method next time to see if it would apply.

I have been a very bad boy. First in capital equipment purchases and second in posting tardy photos. We have several hundred photos that need to be vetted, then annotated and posted.
But, to kick this party off right, I started with a few photos of the "1017A Experiment" for your viewing pleasure.
Does anyone have any details on the rolled 406 at NWMF? I saw it upside
down but never did hear how it happened.
Also I loved seeing everyone there this year, it was great seeing people I
haven't seen in a year again.. even if you drive a strange car or truck. J
