Greetings from Garden City, KS. Garden City is many things, but a garden is not one of them.
On the hub questions, here are some comments:
- My cruise speed is usually between 55 and 62 mph. The truck will usually hold 60 as long as the grades are not too steep. This speed is verified with my GPS.
- The hub failures have been biased toward the rear. I think that 3 were rear the other 2 were front. To Jim's point, he has supplied parts for this truck for quite awhile before I purchased it in 1996.
Hi, All -
I thought I would put this out to the wisdom base here:
When I hold steady pressure on the brake pedal, such as going down a long hill, my pedal will gradually go to the floor. This is with full air pressure, and full brake fluid reservoirs. All things being equal, I would go buy a master cylinder kit and do a rebuild, since it feels exactly like the fluid is getting by the seals during steady braking.
List,
I'm clearing out many of my military trailers. I can deliver to NWMF for
free.
FOR SALE:
* Enclosed German winch trailer: Winching equipment removed. Box
measures 9' long, 44" wide, 44" high. Lots of doors for access, lockable,
water tight, Nevada title, tires are dry rotted but hold air. 2 ton
capacity. I restored this in 2004 but the paint has faded. Would look great
behind your 404 or pickup truck! $1,800.00
* 1970 M101A1 3/4 ton trailer: I bought this a few years ago and
found a newer one for myself.
Hi,
With my Mog being in storage for much of the year, I am beginning to experience some `sticking` of the accelerator and choke cables. Can anyone give advice on what is the proper way to lubricate these ?
Thanks in advance
Steve W.
Hi guys-
I have a few questions for people who own / have owned a VLF / TLF 404. I'm
working on putting the fuel tanks back in place. The forward fuel tank is
different from a normal 404. It has an electric fuel pump on the forward
end of the tank. My pump works, but is missing the screen or bottom piece
that screws on. Does anyone have pictures of what this looks like so I can
fabricate one?
Also, it appears that there in no fuel pick up tube in the forward tank. It
uses the fuel pump pickup. Is this correct?
Now that I have a few minutes of down time, I thought it would be interesting to document a few thoughts on portal axle hubs that are used on the 1300 (and as I understand it, on the 406/416 as well).
As the list members are well aware, I am not much of a mechanic. Generally speaking, things that I have done are out of necessity and I consider my skill level on such things as "nominal".
Having just taken delivery of my new TOY, I have so many questions as to what is what & why, I will try and put a few down and hopefully get information to satisfy my curiosity.
First off, I am sure I need to obtain the shop manual since I received the Owner's Manual with the unit!
Questions:
1) There is a bracket attached to the front bumper, left side near the clearance indicator base with a single round hole? Perhaps a Convey light????
2) On the Dashboard, there are some plastic caps instead of gauges or switches.
Hey list,
Last Sunday was the first chance I've had to take my Mog on a long,
afternoon cruise since I got it (it's a 1964 404) . I cruised up the
pacific coast highway with top down and the doors off from Venice up to
Oxnard. My friend remarked that he's never been stared at so much. (That
made me smile).
However, on my drive I noticed a few unusual noises that I wanted to run
past you all and see if there anything I should be concerned about.
Clutch Noise:
It's a high pitch squeal that only happens when I let out the clutch in 4th
and 5th gear.
Greetings from Siloam Springs, AR. I have posted new photos on
http://www.billcaid.com/2010/HogHunting20100323/Part28/Part28.html
that show our recent travels. We stayed at Bob and Kitty Ragain's farm and there are several photos of his fleet of 406 mogs with implements mounted. From there, we headed south to visit Global Expedition Vehicles and see some of the rigs that they were building. These were NICE units, one U500, one Freightliner M2 4x4, one Mercedes 1017A and an Oshkosh 8x8. These were incredibly nice inside and were very well thought-out.
